About Amanda Richardson

CV

An internationally acclaimed artist, Amanda Richardson’s work is representational in style but exploratory in medium.  Both painter and textile artist, much of her work also involves a broad diversity of collage techniques.  Her work has always been individual, rather than following an accepted school or genre.

A sense of place is strong in the artist’s work, which often describes details of landscape.  Amanda Richardson was born in Cornwall in 1957 and has lived there for much of her life.  She left to take her degree at Goldsmiths College, London University, but her work is essentially involved with wild places and so she was drawn back to her county.  In 1986 she left again, spending ten years on San Juan Island in the Pacific North West of America, working from the dramatic landscape of islands, mountains and water.  Further travels have taken her north to Alaska and south as far as New Zealand.  Her work reflects a particular fascination with plants as they grow, both in gardens and their native environment, and with rock shaped by wind and water.

Much of the artist’s work is commissioned, working with art consultants across the US, creating large-scale artworks for major buildings, enjoying the challenge of site-specific work. Clients include Boeing, University of Alaska, BASF, Marriott Hotels, Hilton Hotels, The Rouse Co., and The Oliver Carr Co.. Despite the success she found in America, Cornwall has remained the artist’s emotional home and in 1996 she returned to live in the far west of the county.  She continues both with public and private commissioned work and gallery exhibitions.
